The art of fishing has been practiced for about 40,000 years and has changed a lot over time. Current technology has played a significant role in the way humans interact with the ocean through fishing. In this course you will follow the story of a pelagic stingray as you learn about bycatch, technology in fisheries and the impact humans have had on the fishing industry.

This course provides tips for how you can help your young child build trust in nature and confidence as a learner. Specific examples will support and inspire you to explore, wonder and learn alongside your curious child.

Grades PreK–2

Learn all about adorable sea otters and the kelp forest habitat they call home. Move like a sea otter and create your own sea otter puppet using simple materials. Practice observing otter behaviors just like a biologist would. This course is designed for students to do with the support of an adult or older sibling.

Grades PreK–2

Learn about the rocky shore and some of the animals who live there.  Create a tide pool in your home, complete with animal models that you make from simple materials.  Explore your tide pool with some science tools and discuss how to care for this ocean home with your loved ones. This course is designed for students to do with the support of an adult or older sibling.

Sharks are often misunderstood. Not all sharks are the big scary meat-eaters depicted in the movies! In this course, you’ll challenge shark stereotypes while building empathy and appreciation for sharks and their diversity.

Become a junior ornithologist by learning about birds and some of the characteristics that make them unique. Learn how to set up your own science notebook, make careful observations and conduct investigations through hands-on activities.

Grades 7–12

Explore the extreme depths of the ocean and how scientists have discovered the animals that live there. Learn about the adaptations that help animals survive in the abyss, hydrothermal vents, and whale falls. This course drew inspiration from The Extreme Life of the Sea by Anthony Palumbi and his father, Stanford professor Steve Palumbi.
