Giant isopod wallpaper

  • Closeup of a giant isopod in the dark, cold waters of the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Into the Deep exhibit
  • Otherworldly allure

Descend down to the depths of the ocean and you may spy one of these curious creatures. At sixteen inches long, the giant isopod has certainly earned its place as the largest isopod species (there are over 10,000 species!). In the darkness of the deep sea, this curious crustacean scuttles across the seafloor on its 14 spindly legs, using its large eyes and long antennae to sense its surroundings. Food is scarce, so this deep-sea giant dines on detritus — often scavenging for falling fish heads, crab bits, and marine snow. Delish!
