A dream years in the making begins to take its final form as special cranes lift the 78,000-pound acrylic viewing window of the Outer Bay exhibit into place. The window was the largest in the world (at that time) and offers a vista that transports visitors 60 miles offshore.
The ribs of the exhibit's concrete walls support a fiberglass liner. More than two million blue tiles cover the exhibit to create the feeling of looking into the open sea. In the fall of 1995, the first fishes move in when 80 yellowfin tuna and 120 bonito are transferred from our holding facilities.
