Feb 2008: Sanctuary Moves Forward

1. Past Actions
Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary announces that there is a need for marine protected areas in the federal waters of the Sanctuary.

On February 15th, Paul Michel, Superintendent of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary announced a decision to move forward with a process to implement protected areas in the offshore waters of the Monterey Bay Sanctuary.

The Sanctuary will now develop proposals for marine protected areas in federal waters that can complement those already created in state waters. This process will be open to public and stakeholder comment. We'll let you know when and how you can help.

Thank you all for sending emails and postcards supporting this decision. Superintendent Michel noted that the majority of feedback he received was in favor of moving ahead with creating protected areas.
