Dec 2008: Flawed Proposal Withdrawn!
1. Past Actions
In August 2008, our Ocean Action Team and Aquarium visitors sent over 1,600 letters and postcards to the National Marine Fisheries Service regarding a proposal that would give more control over environmental review to the fishing industry, while limiting the public’s ability to participate in key decisions impacting the oceans.
On December 19 2008, the Bush administration announced a decision to withdraw this flawed proposal before leaving office. The proposal met with strong opposition across the U.S.; over 80 members of Congress went on record against this change, and the Fisheries Service received many thousands of objections from ocean wildlife advocates like you.
The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) requires government agencies, like the National Marine Fisheries Service, to consider the environmental impact of its actions. NEPA has brought about many conservation successes, including mandatory changes to fishing gear to protect sea turtles from drowning in shrimp nets, and streamer lines on longline fishing boats to deter albatrosses from baited hooks.
