Nov 2008: New Funds for Sea Otter Research
1. Past Actions
California tax payers' generous contributions are supporting new and important research into sea otter health.
In 2007, California tax payers donated over $250,000 to the California Sea Otter Fund. In 2008, these funds have made it possible to continue to explore the relationship between various forms of pollution and sea otter adult mortality.
In the last year, this research has lead directly to a discovery that another form of land-sea pollution — blue-green algae, most likely from stagnant fresh water sources — is killing otherwise healthy adult sea otters.
It has also resulted in the funding and implementation of an effort to compare the biology, health and demography of sea otters living off the Big Sur coast, with those that live in and around Monterey.
By taking blood samples and fitting otters with radio transmitters, the team, including our veterinarian, hopes to learn if the isolated population in Big Sur is healthier than otters elsewhere. If the Big Sur otters suffer fewer diseases and parasites than those living in more polluted coastal waters, we may find clues to help us explain what is keeping the population from fully recovering.
